chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-04-17 21:36

Fuxian Lake in Yuxi, Yunnan province, and other scenic spots are facing threats posed by tourism real estate projects, according to an article in People's Daily (excerpts below).

The problem concerns more than just Fuxian Lake. Statistics show that 100 leading companies in the industry many be involved in tourism real estate development.

Facing strict property control policies, many companies are turning to building properties for tourists.

On top of this, some local officials, driven by short-term agendas, are turning a blind eye to environmental destruction to reap the financial rewards.

But this comes at a price.

Natural beauty and scenic spots should be enjoyed by everyone.

Local governments must clarify the relationship between the interests of local government, the public and property companies, and not be blinded by superficial prosperity.
