Comment on "Chinese economy will not derail" (China Daily, Aug 16)

Some Western media have talked about a "superstition" they call nominalism. Many politicians and owners of large media groups believe that if they say or write something, it will really happen. They call it "narratives".

But the "narratives" that China's economy is actually weak cannot be farther from truth, and it is nothing but a crude example of Western media's sensationalism.

There are thousands of reasons why the global financial crisis did not hurt China much while it wreaked havoc in developed economies. The most convincing reason why China emerged almost unscathed from the financial crisis is that, unlike the West, it has a huge domestic market.
