The Taipingwan of Kuandian county has become the biggest fresh water salmon farm in China, according to the local authorities on Feb 29, 2012. With a 380,000 square meter area, the salmon farm has the annual capacity for two million salmon fry and 600 tons of salmon.

The Taipingwan reservoir covers a water area of 2666.67 hectares, with over 666.67 hectares of it not freezing during the winter. The water is clean and the temperature goes no higher than 22℃ throughout the year, which is quite suitable for farming cold water fish.

The Dandong Huamei Fishing Co Ltd was established in June of 2009 after attracting investments. Several varieties of salmons including maple leaf salmon and coho salmon were introduced from abroad and have been successfully farmed through a net cage in the Taipinwan reservoir.

Currently, salmons produced in Kuandian have been sold in both the domestic and foreign markets. A salmon processing factory is also being constructed with six other companies having been put into production with salmon farming led by the Dandong Huamei Fishing.

The salmon aquaculture has been appointed 'a key support project' by the Dandong municipal government for aquatic products.
