Chengxiang town covers an area of 85.71 square kilometers. It consists of six villager committees and 22 neighborhood committees, with a permanent resident population of 94,000 and a floating population of 79,000. It has been honored as one of the third batches of National Advanced Culture Towns, a "Happy Town of China" and the "Home of China's Folk Arts".

In 2012, the total regional GDP of the town reached 11.3 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 8.4 percent. The total fiscal revenue reached 1.98 billion yuan, including 1.19 billion yuan in public budgetary revenue, a year-on-year increase of 14.7 percent. The overall investment in fixed assets reached 3.7 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 19 percent. Total industrial output value reached 14 billion yuan. A total of 27 enterprises saw their output value exceed 100 million yuan. The town is promoting the optical electromechanical industrial park project, one of the key construction projects of Taicang during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15). It is also promoting the "one park with three zones" project in the Service Outsourcing Park, and land reclamation and high-standard farmland construction. The emerging industries generated a total output value of 4.27 billion yuan, while the added-value of the service industry reached 8.4 billion yuan.

In Jincang Lake Ecological Park, the town has held the Kite Festival, Folk Custom Festival and Dragon Boat Festival, attracting more than 500,000 tourists.
