Taicang, a county-level city in East China's Jiangsu province, was selected as the host city of the 2018 IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) council on Dec 1.

It is the second time Taicang has been picked to host the top-level IAAF walking event: The city was previously the venue for the IAAF World Race Walking Cup (now named Walking Championships) in 2014.

The 2018 edition of the biennial championships, which has a history of 55 years, will be the third to take place in China. Beijing was the first Chinese city to host the event in 1995. The race consists of male and female races, and is divided into a senior group and youth group.

Sebastian Coe, president of the IAAF, praised highly the Chinese Athletics Association's contribution to the organization of IAAF events. "China is one of the most successful race walking nations and we can expect large crowds of spectators in 2018, just as there were in 2014," he said.

Zhang Shuantai, an official from Jiangsu Sports Bureau, commented that it's a great honor for Taicang to host the 2018 IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships. He also expressed confidence in Taicang's experience in hosting high-level sports competitions, as well as the city’s well-developed supporting facilities.
