Cheung Nim-Kwan, CEO of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a bachelor of science in 1969. He received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology. Later he did research and administrative work at AT&T Bell Lab and Bellcore. From 1999 to 2002, Cheung was vice-president of the Applied Research Government Program in Telcordia Technologies. Under his leadership, the government-funded research program portfolio grew at double-digit rates each year.

Cheung is a pioneer in single-mode lightwave communication system development. In 1984, he became the district manager of advanced lightwave technology at Bell Communications Research, where he created three world-class research programs in high-speed, coherent, and subcarrier-multiplex lightwave systems. He designed the megabit light network testers in the 1990s, which have evolved into today’s lightwave Internet.

In 2005, Dr. Cheung was elected as the 18th president of the IEEE Communications Society. He has over 150 journal publications and has served in different editorial positions, including editor-in-chief of the renowned IEEE Communications Magazine.

Introduction to ASTRI

The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was founded by the Government of Hong Kong SAR in 2000 with a mission of enhancing Hong Kong's competitiveness in technology-based industries through applied research.

Since inception, ASTRI has delivered world-class technologies and customer-focused R&D which cater to the needs of the industry. Its R&D efforts traverse five main technological areas: communications technology, enterprise and consumer electronics, IC design, material and packaging technologies, and bio-medical electronics.

In April 2006, ASTRI was designated the Hong Kong Research and Development Centre for Information and Communications Technologies by the Innovative and Technology Commission. It serves to perform leading-edge R&D to provide technologies for industry, cultivate talented personnel and act as a focal point to unite industry and university R&D assets.

Through close collaboration with the government, industry enterprises and universities in development of modern technologies and market trends, ASTRI has succeeded in building many innovative projects.
