The nomination of Premier Li Keqiang was approved by nearly 3,000 deputies to the National People's Congress in Beijing on Friday. It is widely expected that Li and newly elected President Xi Jinping can inject fresh momentum into the country's development, despite a host of challenges ahead. Li, born in July 1955, became the seventh premier since the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, replacing Wen Jiabao, who had headed the State Council since 2003.
Li is a very pragmatic and easygoing person. He's open to views and suggestions from all sides, and familiar with various aspects of China. He's also a considerate leader who enjoys high prestige.

A handshake signaled the passing of the baton and start of a new era for the world's most populous country. The people of China saw their new head of state elected on Thursday, carrying the dreams and aspirations of about 20 percent of the world's population on his shoulders. Xi Jinping, leader of the Communist Party of China, was elected president by nearly 3,000 deputies to the National People's Congress at a plenary meeting in Beijing. After the election result was announced, Xi stood up, acknowledged the thunderous applause and bowed to the deputies in the Great Hall of the People.
The head of the People's Bank of China said on Wednesday his priority is to guard against inflation.
An experimental spacecraft will be launched before 2015 to conduct crucial re-entry tests on the capsule to be used in the Chang'e-5 lunar-sample mission, a leading space program official said.
People's livelihoods and public welfare headed the agenda of national political advisers this year, echoing the call by top leaders on Tuesday to highlight these issues.
