Liu Linghua is one of the most famous artists in the Chinese mainland today who specializes in oil paintings. In 1984, he studied in the engraving department at Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts and he has focused his study on oil painting since 1998.

Liu Yanbo has been obsessed with "xiaorenshu" since he was a boy and was attracted to roadside stands selling the palm-sized illustrated books. Vendors would rip the covers off the books and pin them up to attract customers. He could rent a book for as little as 0.01 yuan each.

Xiaorenshu presents a story with drawings and captions. It began in the Han Dynasty (260 BC-AD 220) with mural paintings on the walls of tombs.
