Students in West China receive 1 billion yuan for emergency injury insurance

2006-03-28
Xinhua

Primary and middle school students in West China on Monday received a donation of 1 billion yuan (around 12 million U.S. dollars) for emergency injury insurance.

"This move solves the current need of the students who live in underdeveloped areas and cannot afford the insurance," Chinese Minister of Education Zhou Ji said at a ceremony held on the 11th Education Day on Safety for Chinese primary and middle school students.

A survey showed that few primary and middle school students in China had emergency injury insurance.

"Therefore," Zhou said, "there was an urgent need for an Education Day on Safety." The educational program was jointly launched by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Public Security, State Administration of Production Safety, as well as other local organizations for young people.

Zhou called on primary and middle schools to give more lessons to students on how to protect and save themselves against dangers and emergency.

He stressed that more care should be paid to migrant workers' children and concrete measures should be taken to strengthen safety insurance in rural boarding schools. Schools, families and society should join hands to give knowledge on self-protection to children.

In addition to the insurance, 24,000 wall maps on safety knowledge were also presented to West China's primary and middle schools.
