First test-tube babies of oxygen-sparse Qinghai-Tibet Plateau doing well

2004-04-26
Xinhua

The first ever test-tube twins have been doing well since their birth in Xining, capital of northwestern Qinghai province on the air-sparse Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, on April 22 morning, a hospital announcement said Monday.

The twins, a male and a female, both rated fine on measurements of breath, heartbeat, muscle and skin color, indicating they are in very healthy condition, according to Dang Xiaohong, director of the department of gynecology and obstetrics.

It was good news for sterile women on the plateau, where the long-time cold climate all year round and sparse oxygen content make test-tube baby programs difficult, the doctor noted.

The sterility affects one tenth of the total population of women of child-bearing ages in the highland province.

The male baby was born first, weighing 2.6 kilograms, followed by his sister three minutes later. The baby girl weighed 2.5 kilograms at birth.
