Male college students value the appearance of their partner a lot when seeking a romantic relationship, while female students pay attention to a wider range of factors, according to a survey.

Conducted jointly by education research company MyCOS and the education website of Tencent, the survey polled more than 8,000 college students nationwide and the findings were released as the Chinese Valentines' Day, which falls on Aug 28 this year, approaches.

According to the survey, 72 percent of the male students said how the other person looks is very important in deciding whether to ask a person out, while only 54 percent of the female students believe so.

In the eyes of most female students, intelligence, health, finance, family and educational backgrounds are of equal importance when selecting a person to date.

The survey also found that almost half of the students polled said they want to get into a relationship with a purpose of "pursuing true love". While 46 percent said they would like to be engaged in a relationship so that both can help each other in life and study.

About seven out of 10 college students are currently single, and a major cause for that, they said, is their introverted character, according to the survey.
