Time-consuming, but essential, care

By Zhou Wenting | China Daily | Updated: 2016-11-25 09:44

We help the elderly with their daily lives and are with them around the clock. However, because of their age and illness, it takes more time and effort to take care of them, especially those who have had strokes or have Alzheimer's disease.

For example, when we help them brush their teeth, if the person is bedridden, I help them to complete all the stages. If they have Alzheimer's and have forgotten how to brush their teeth, I teach them and help them to remember through repetitive practice.

I cook three meals a day for clients.

I prepare the food on the basis of their preferences, but I adapt the amount of meat, dairy products, salt and cooking oil according to each person's health.

We encourage seniors with good swallowing functions to eat unaided, but we always sit and observe because they can easily choke while eating and maybe even suffocate. If the person is unable to swallow, I insert a nasal-gastric tube and make a liquid diet for them.

I accompany all those who are able to go for a walk after breakfast and after their afternoon nap. If they are unable to walk with ease, I push them in their wheelchairs.

Many elderly people have brittle bones, which can be alleviated by exposure to sunlight. We encourage them to mingle with their neighbors and keep themselves socially active.

After lunch, I always ask the senior to take a nap, and after that I prepare snacks for them while they read the newspaper or watch TV.

The food must be simple but healthy; a bowl of mushroom soup that can help to soften blood vessels, for example.

If seniors are unable to move with comfort, I'll spend hours a day massaging them and helping with rehabilitation exercises.
