GUANGZHOU - Seven people were injured in a knife attack Thursday in South China's Guangdong province, police said Friday.

A 29-year-old man, surnamed Liu, hacked seven people with a kitchen knife, including six in a rented room and one outside the room, at 5 pm Thursday in Tanzhou township in the city of Zhongshan, said Yi Jian, a spokesman of Zhongshan municipal public security bureau.

Liu, from the city of Ziyang in the southwestern Sichuan province, also intentionally injured himself after the knife attack, the spokesman said.

Of the seven injured, two sustained serious injuries. But after emergency treatment, the two were at no risk of deaths, the police officer said.

Police have detained the attacker and are investigating the motives behind the attack.
