TAIPEI - Taiwan's local weather bureau issued a land warning for typhoon Nanmadol at 8:30 pm Saturday, saying that the areas of Pingtung and Taitung should prepare for torrential downpour and strong winds.

The island's emergency operation center Saturday afternoon required the authorities of the possibly affected areas to strengthen preventive evacuations.

The weather bureau said that typhoon Nanmadol was currently centered 300 kilometers south-southeast of the island's southernmost point of Eluanbi.

The typhoon, though having been slightly weakened during the past several hours, continues to move in a north-northwesterly direction, threatening Pingtung and Taitung.
