Workshop blast kills 1, injures 30 in East China

HANGZHOU --The number of the injured people in a workshop blast has risen to 30, according to the latest information from the local authorities in East China's Zhejiang Province.

The blast happened at 1:05 pm Thursday in a polishing workshop at Zhejiang Jinaoda Industrial and Trading Co Ltd in Binhai Industrial Zone, Taizhou City.

One person was killed at the scene, 30 others were injured, four seriously. The injured people were all under observation in hospital, said a spokesman of the city government.

Officials from the city's work safety, public security and fire fighting department rushed to the scene immediately

"We were making aluminium alloy handles when the blast happened," said one of the injured workers.

The production of the company has been suspended.

In the workshop, the concrete-made work table was blasted into pieces and window glass was also shattered to pieces. Glass, accessories and window frames made by aluminium alloy were found all over the road near the workshop.

The local government has ordered a comprehensive survey of work safety in all companies in Binhai Industrial Zone.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation and the number of people in the workshop when the blast occurred was unknown yet, police said.
