BEIJING - Chinese authorities uncovered 3,503 batches of substandard imported food in 2014, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) on Friday.

Poor quality, food additives and risk of microbial contamination were the biggest problems found with the imports, which came from 79 countries or regions, said the AQSIQ.

The substandard food was mainly cakes and biscuits, beverages and grain products, according to the AQSIQ.

The AQSIQ also uncovered 161 batches of substandard cosmetics from 20 countries or regions, mainly used for skin and hair.

Incorrect labeling and risk of microbial contamination were the major problems found in the imports.

The products were either sent back or destroyed and did not enter the Chinese market.
