China to respond after Slovak president meets Dalai Lama

China will respond accordingly to the Slovak president meeting with the Dalai Lama, which was in contravention of the one-China policy that Slovakia had promised to stick to, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Monday.

President Andrej Kiska of Slovakia has "severely damaged" the political foundation of ties by meeting the Dalai Lama in Slovakia on Sunday, disregarding China's strong opposition, Hua said in a daily news conference in Beijing.

"The 14th Dalai Lama has long been engaged in anti-China and separatist activities, and has been conspiring to split Tibet away from China,’’ she said.

Hua reiterated that China is resolutely opposed to the Dalai Lama engaging in anti-China and separatist activities in any guise or manner in any country, and is against officials of any country having contact, in any form, with him.

China requires Slovakia to have a clear understanding of the anti-China and separatist nature of the Dalai clique, effectively respect China's core interests and major concerns, and strictly stick to the one-China policy, Hua said.

Also, Slovakia should take effective measures to eliminate the negative influence caused by the wrongful behavior and thus restore the development of its ties with China, she said.
