Still a lot to do to put an end to discrimination

(China Daily) Updated: 2016-06-01 07:58

A domestic television advertisement has aroused controversy because it shows a black man jumping into a washing machine then coming out as an Asian. How could an enterprise be so ignorant as to make such a racially discriminatory advertisement? Comments Beijing News:

There are some basic values in the 21st century, such as racial equality, mutual courtesy, and human rights. The advertisement has obviously broken the principle of racial equality because it implies blacks are not as clean as others.

How could such an advertisement come out?

Racial equality is one of the most sensitive topics in the modern world. Although many might argue that talking about racial equality easily leads to political correctness, that is not the case, because equality and courtesy have not yet become common sense in China.

For example, Zhao Benshan, a popular domestic comic, met heavy criticism when he took his comedy to the United States because his jokes made fun of venerable groups such as the disabled. His popularity in China shows the country still has a lot to do in terms of racial equality and courtesy.

Actually, discrimination exists almost in every part of society: gender discrimination, regional discrimination, class discrimination, and homosexual discrimination. It is time such mentality was changed.
