Anhui province to go WiFi

Anhui provincial government signed an agreement with China Mobile Group on June 15 to a cluster of wireless cities in the province.

China Mobile Group will build a wireless network in Anhui province with an investment of 30 billion yuan ($4.5 billion). The mobile phone provider will work in partnership with the provincial government during the five years, according to an agreement signed last week.

The provincial government and the telecommunications giant inked a strategic cooperation agreement on June 15 in Hefei, the capital city of Anhui province. They vowed to work together to develop a cluster of wireless cities in the province.

Party Chief Zhang Baoshun, Governor Wang Sanyun, China Mobile President Wang Jianzhou and China Mobile Chief Executive Li Yue were at the signing ceremony.

In this information era, wireless networks are essential to the expansion of cities, Wang Sanyun said at the signing.

Zhang said development of wireless cities is crucial to expand China’s information-based economy. The new project will use the TD-SCDMA (time division synchronous code division multiple access) interface specification agreed to in a strategic cooperation agreement signed two years

According to the agreement, China Mobile will spend 30 billion yuan setting up Web service platforms across the province. The local government’s role will be to promote implementation of the project and create a favorable environment for the company.
