Chinese handicraft on show at Nepalese museum

LALITPUR, Nepal - An exhibition of New Innovation of Handicraft - China's Intangible Cultural Heritage opened its doors on Wednesday, and will run through Nov 20, offering Nepali people an insight into China's rich and abundant art and culture.

The two-week event, jointly organized by the China Cultural Center in Nepal, the Network of International Culturalink Entities and China Arts and Entertainment Group, is being held at the Patan Museum.

The exhibition has showcased the latest developments in Chinese handicraft, which is one of the most charming expressions of traditional Chinese culture, according to the organizers.

The exhibition features 30 exhibits of filigree inlay, carving lacquer and paper-cutting, which also represent Chinese tourism products.

"Such exhibitions are important for both the public and art enthusiasts. I believe this event can strengthen the cultural relationship between the two countries," says Damodar Gautam, chief of the department of archaeology of the Nepalese government.

Appreciating the Chinese support in the reconstruction of earthquake-damaged heritage sites around the country, he expressed a hope that China will help Nepal in preserving and protecting other areas of cultural heritage as well.

On the occasion of the opening, a representative from the Chinese embassy in Nepal said, through this exhibition, Nepali people will be able to understand more about Chinese culture and heritage.

As part of the exhibition of filigree inlay and fine metal crafts, there are jewelry products like brooches and earrings, as well as a handbag and a bottle inlaid with flowers and pearls.

As well as the exhibits, two renowned Chinese artists also demonstrated their skills to the visitors.

"The exhibition is quite colorful. I am glad to see unique Chinese items full of art and history," Nirajan Tiwari, a tourism professional, says.

People from various walks of life, including cultural professionals, students and art enthusiasts, visited the exhibition on its opening day.
