What they say
Editor's note: Five representatives of model civil servants were invited by the State Council Information Office to share stories on Wednesday of how they do their best to serve the people.
Snowstorms swept Qinghai before the Spring Festival this year, with the Sanjiangyuan area suffering the most. A large area of grasslands was covered by snow, making it hard for the wild animals to forage. For their safety, our cadres and villagers braved the freezing temperature of-20 C and worked for over 40 days in a row to guard them with our lives. Not a single wild animal in the area died as a result of the snowstorm.

There was an unforgettable case during my mediation work. It was a property dispute that involved an elderly person and this person's four children, who already had their own families. The area where the four children lived was within 2 kilometers. We talked with them one at a time. I traveled more than 200 kilometers in total while communicating with them back and forth, which was not easy to do. Luckily, their problem was worked out.

Song Qingzhu, director of the legal education department of the bureau of justice in Beichen district in Tianjin
I cannot forget participating in the emergency mapping process during the Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan province in 2008. There were many aftershocks of magnitude 6 or above after the earthquake. Every time the aftershocks occurred, the houses swayed violently. Our surveyors, however, stood up against the aftershocks and stuck to their work. I, together with my colleagues, spent days and nights at the office and had no time left for the elderly and kids back at home.

Our team consists of five comrades, with the youngest from the Hani ethnic group in Yunnan province. We once wrote more than 50 reports in three months and worked late almost every day. We cover a large area involving industrial parks and 16 districts in Beijing. For one survey, we went to Yanqing district in the morning for a meeting and headed to Tongzhou district in the afternoon, which was a 300-kilometer trip in one day.

The grassroots cadres on our island cannot be with their families for most of the year. During typhoon seasons, we usually have to wait for a month or two. I remember when I became the Party secretary of Huaniao Island. At the time, our island was also going through an election for new cadres. One director came to me and told me he had to quit. I found out that he hadn't gone back home for a long time because of work, and his wife couldn't stand the longtime separation and wanted to divorce him.
