Former official expelled from Party

Zhou Bin, former deputy secretary of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Party Committee of Wuhan, Hubei province, was expelled from the Party and removed from public office for disciplinary and legal violations, China's anti-graft watchdogs announced on Monday. Zhou accepted gifts and money that might affect the fair execution of official duties, engaged in profit-making activities against regulations and owned shares in nonlisted companies, according to a statement released by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and National Supervisory Commission. He often participated in poker games with real money, they said.

Repair timetable set for Great Wall

Beijing has formulated an emergency work plan to repair dilapidated sections of the Great Wall over the next five years, according to municipal cultural heritage authorities. The work plan identifies 2,772 meters of the Great Wall and 17 towers as the priority for "emergency repair" over the next three years. Beijing boasts a total length of 520.77 kilometers of the Great Wall, which is more than 21,000 km long and traverses 15 provinces and cities.

Yunnan

Police seize over 41 kg of drugs

Police in Yunnan province apprehended two suspects and seized more than 41 kilograms of drugs, the public security bureau in Tengchong said on Monday. The police in Tengchong received a tip in early April that two people were planning to transport a large amount of drugs from Myanmar to China. Police set up an investigative team and dispatched officers to the border areas of Dehong Dai and Jingpo autonomous prefecture.

Hebei

City relocates 13 polluting steel mills

The major steel-producing city of Tangshan has kicked off a campaign to relocate and upgrade 13 steel and iron mills to reduce pollution and energy consumption. The 13 mills, near the main urban areas of Tangshan, have a total production capacity of 51.4 million metric tons, Lang Wenchang, deputy director of the city's development and reform commission, said on Sunday. The 13 mills will be relocated to coastal industrial parks in Laoting and Fengnan in Tangshan, Lang said.
