Cold air rolls into central, eastern China

Cold air is expected to sweep across central and eastern China, bringing sharp drops in temperature, the national observatory forecast on Wednesday. From Thursday onward, the temperature will drop by more than 10 C in a large part of the region, according to the National Meteorological Center. Meanwhile, the observatory predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in many southern areas on Wednesday and Thursday, including Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Anhui and Hunan provinces. The NMC added that light and moderate snow or sleet would fall on some areas on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Yunnan

Forest fire doused; 7.3 hectares burned

A forest fire that broke out on Tuesday afternoon in Yunnan province had been extinguished as of Wednesday noon, local authorities said. The blaze started at 2:30 pm on Tuesday in the forest in Longpan village in Yulong Naxi autonomous county, according to the county's information office. More than 1,200 people and five helicopters were mobilized to fight the fire on Yulong Snow Mountain. The fire burned about 7.3 hectares, the information office said. No injuries were reported. The scarcely populated mountainous area is prone to fires in the dry spring season.
