Shanxi

8 still missing under landslide debris

Twelve people died in a landslide that destroyed a house in Shanxi province on Friday, and eight people remain missing, local authorities said on Monday. The rescue team, after more than two days' work, cleared the way for heavy rescue equipment to find those still unaccounted for. To avoid secondary damage to anyone who might be buried in debris, the rescue team used the machines mainly to clean up the collapsed buildings, while getting in contact with the families of those missing to confirm what they were wearing and narrow down the places they could have been. There were 79 people in the area when the landslide occurred, 46 of whom made their way out of the danger zone by themselves. Thirteen were rescued, according to local authorities.

Local prosecutors said in a statement that the 11 people were arrested for "causing a major liability accident". They added that the case is still being processed.
