World: Green towers grace Milan skyline
Called "the most exciting new tower in the world", Milan's Bosco Verticale, or "vertical forest", which opened in 2014, comprises two landscaped towers with 113 apartments that offer expansive views of the city. The project was proposed by architect Stefano Boeri as part of his BioMilano - six ideas for a biodiverse metropolis. His company describes the towers as "a model for a sustainable residential building, a project for metropolitan reforestation that contributes to the regeneration of the environment and urban biodiversity". The design is characterized by its integrated vegetation, including more than 1,000 different species of trees, shrubs and plants. In total, there are 780 planted trees.
