Elephant rides to be banned at Angkor Wat

On our Sina Weibo

Elephant rides at Cambodia's largest tourist attraction, Angkor Wat, will be banned next year. Over 2.5 million people visit the site annually and 14 elephants transport many of the visitors between temples. The Angkor Elephant Group Committee has confirmed that next year the 14 elephants will be moved to a conservation and breeding center. Visitors can still watch the elephants and take photos of them in the center, according to the group. The use of elephants at Angkor Wat first received international attention in 2016 after one elephant collapsed and died from exhaustion after carrying tourists.
