Art exhibits show a sense of sensibility
Simon Lee, founder and director of the London-based Simon Lee Gallery, said that he has the Chinese luck numbers in mind when he selected works to take to the Art021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair, held between Nov 7 and 10 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.
"We have a solo booth dedicated to the showing of a range of works by Angela Bulloch," he said, referring to the Berlin-based installation artist who was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1997, and whose works have been on view in museums around the worlds, from Guggenheim, New York to the Sharjah Art Museum, the United Arab Emirates, to the Basel Cathedral.
"Among other works, we've taken to Shanghai her iconic stacks and a Paravant," said Lee, the latter being a piece of screen-like installation made up of black and red rectangular shapes. "For the stacks, we chose those with either six or eight pieces because those are the lucky numbers in China. The red color of the Paravant is also a nod to Chinese culture, in which the color represents happiness, success and good fortune."
