A heritage that is Chinese, Spanish, Filipino and American

By Rene Pastor | China Daily | Updated: 2019-11-15 07:57

My grandmother is one-fourth or one-half Chinese. I could never be sure about the precise percentage. My memory is a little fuzzy on that score.

I never really talked to her much but the one time we chatted in a garden in her old home in Quezon city, the Philippines, she told me some bits of her family history.

She said her father hailed from Fujian province, the launching ground of the Chinese diaspora that eventually migrated and spread throughout Southeast Asia. My grandmother's Philippinized surname is Tejico. Her given Christian name is Luisa.
