Crab in Japan fetches record $46,000 at auction

A Japanese bidder forked out $46,000 at an auction for a snow crab last week - a price that "probably set a new world record". The winter seafood delicacy is now in season in the country's western Tottori region, and the giant crustacean was snapped up. In Japan, buyers often pay eye-watering sums to secure a seasonal first at auction, from tuna to melons, with media attention guaranteed. The crab weighed in at 1.2 kilograms and measured 14.6 centimeters across. According to Inamoto, the price exceeded last year's record price of 2 million yen, which was registered at the time in Guinness World Records as the most expensive crab.
