Man who fled crash arrested after 19 years
A 62-year-old man on the run for almost 19 years after a fatal road accident has been arrested after returning to his hometown to see his two children. The man, surnamed Xu, and his wife, Ma, were detained by police in Guang'an on Oct 16 after being reported by a relative of one of the victims. Xu fled the city with his wife and left behind a daughter, then age 14, and a son, 8, after the fatalities on Nov 6, 2000. Police said Xu drove a van which mowed down a motorized tricycle driver, surnamed Liu, and a cyclist, surnamed Gong, who was transporting two children. One of the children died at the scene while the other three victims later died in hospital. Xu's mother told police she did not know the whereabouts of the couple after they fled the city and left the children with her.
