On Oct 29, 1991, Chinese chess challenger Xie Jun, 21, dethroned defending world champion Maya Chiburdanidze of the Soviet Union at the Women's World Chess Championship, as seen in this item from China Daily.
She was women's world champion from 1991 to 1996 and again from 1999 to 2001, when she withdrew from world championship play.
