2 dead, 12 injured in college party shooting

A gunman opened fire at an off-campus college party in Texas, leaving two people dead and 12 others injured before he escaped in the ensuing chaos, authorities said on Sunday. Authorities believe the shooter may have been targeting just one person at the party of about 750 people outside Greenville, about 25 kilometers southwest of a satellite campus of the Texas A&M University System, and that others may have been shot at random, Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said. Authorities were still looking for the suspect, Meeks said, and had not yet identified him. The shooting took place around midnight Saturday at what Meeks described as a Halloween and homecoming party for Texas A&M University-Commerce, though officials have said it was not a school-sanctioned event.

President calls for post-poll peace

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said on Sunday that the defeated candidates in the Oct 15 general elections should not resort to violence to resolve alleged disputes. "The price of violence is too high for our people and for the mentors themselves," Nyusi said after the National Election Commission announced his Frelimo party's sweeping victory and his reelection for a second term. The preliminary results were rejected by opposition parties Renamo and MDM, which alleged widespread fraud and irregularities.

New Delhi fights pollution after Diwali

After India's biggest fireworks party of the year, New Delhi awoke to a pollution hangover on Monday with the capital forced to breathe hazardous levels of toxic particles. A thick smog engulfed landmarks such as the capital's Red Fort and India Gate while drivers had visibility cut by the haze that built up after the Diwali holiday weekend. Tens of thousands of people set off firecrackers into the early hours of Monday, pushing the government air quality index beyond the top recordable level of 999.

Rare painting found in kitchen fetches $27m

A rare masterpiece by Italian early Renaissance master Cimabue that was discovered in a French kitchen was sold on Sunday for 24 million euros ($26.6 million), about five times the initial estimate. The Acteon auction house did not identify the winning bidder for the painting, Christ Mocked, at the sale in Senlis, outside Paris. The selling price, which included costs, smashed the initial estimate of between four million and six million euros.
