Hearing-impaired professor helps students

A woman, 38, who became the first hearing-impaired person to receive a PhD from Shanghai Fudan University in 2009, has taught nearly 800 students. Born in Wuhan, Hubei province, Professor Zheng Xuan, lost most of her hearing after a medical incident at the age of 2. She learned to communicate by lipreading and entered mainstream education, completing her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Wuhan University. She declined job offers in Shanghai and Shenzhen, choosing instead to teach at Chongqing Normal University's special education department - the only one in West China for students who are hearing-impaired.
