The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) will impose a salary cap on domestic players from the 2020-2021 season onwards.
In a statement released following a meeting of club investors in Beijing on Thursday, the CBA said the move aims to curb spiraling wages and promote the sustainable development of the league.
According to the plan, unanimously approved by investors, the initial benchmark cap will be 36 million yuan (around $5.09 million) for each team. Clubs, however, will be allowed a buffer of 12 million yuan, so the cap can be extended to 48 million yuan.
