Regulations to allow for expert advice

A new set of regulations on intellectual property protection is to come into effect on Nov 1 in Tianjin. According to the regulations, which the Standing Committee of the Tianjin People's Congress passed in late September, experts will be able to assist with handling an IP dispute as technical investigators. Their engagement will increase efficiency and professionalism in related administrative investigations, local legislators said.

High-tech enterprise numbers increase

The number of businesses that have been granted the status of being a national high-tech enterprise reached 25,000 in Beijing last year, an increase of 25 percent from 2017, according to a recent report on the city's industrial and economic development. On average, 199 innovation-driven companies were founded a day in the city, the report showed.

Patent training held in provincial capital

Zhengzhou, capital city of Henan province, held an intellectual property and patents training program in September, attracting hundreds of participants from local IP offices, patent agencies, higher educational institutions and businesses. Experts lectured on development trends in IP services in international trade, insurance policies amid patent commercialization, spotting and fostering high-value patents, and supervision over patent agencies. Henan is home to nearly 1,230 qualified patent attorneys, 80 patent agencies, and 40 patent information service providers.

Shanghai

Time-honored brands to be given boost

Local authorities have rolled out a new initiative to revitalize time-honored brands. A time-honored brand is a title granted by the Ministry of Commerce to enterprises that existed before 1956. The move will encourage the long-established local businesses to enhance reform and innovation in their marketing, business models, distribution channels and brand building, policymakers said. The initiative includes building an operation platform dedicated to traditional brands to increase media exposure and public awareness, local officials said.

Innovative startup projects set for final

Nine of 45 semifinal business teams at the Silicon Valley leg of Chuangxiang China, an annual international innovation and startup project competition, went through to the grand final on Sept 28, which is slated to be held in Hefei, capital of Anhui province, in November. The Silicon Valley leg attracted more contestants from more countries and regions than in previous competitions, including Europe, the United States, Japan, South Korea and Israel, organizers said, adding that many of the startup projects target the Chinese market.

Sandalwood museum to open in Hengqin

Chan Laiwa, founder of the China Red Sandalwood Museum, announced in September that its new branch is scheduled to open in Hengqin, Guangdong province, at the end of this year. The new facility in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will showcase the traditional Chinese art of red sandalwood carving, which was ranked among national intangible cultural heritage in 2011, and provide a premium platform for international cultural exchanges, Chan said. The museum has received hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world since it opened in Beijing 20 years ago.
