Taliban threats see Afghan presidential vote turnout plunge

China Daily | Updated: 2019-09-30 08:10

KABUL - Voter participation in Afghanistan's presidential elections appeared on Sunday to have been lower than in previous years, with turnout hit by the threat of attacks.

Afghans went to the polls on Saturday to vote in the first round of a presidential race that will decide whether President Ashraf Ghani will win a second five-year term.

About 9.6 million Afghans in the war-torn nation - with an estimated population of 35 million - had registered to vote in the election, which was held at nearly 4,900 polling stations.
