Research suggests garlic can replace antibiotics

Scientists at Tianjin University have discovered antibacterial properties in pickled Laba garlic, suggesting it could be used as an alternative to antibiotics. Chen Haixia's team discovered that Laba garlic has three active peptides that can destroy bacteria, Science and Technology Daily reported. The results have also been published in science journal Food and Function. The vinegar-preserved green and slightly spicy dish is usually prepared for the Laba Festival. Laba garlic may offer one way to reduce patients' reliance on antibiotics, the overuse of which gives rise to antibiotic-resistant superbugs, according to the research.
