Building preservation focus of major forum
The Fuzhou Ancient Houses Protection and Cultural Inheritance Forum, held in provincial capital Fuzhou on July 28, attracted more than 500 experts to discuss the protection, inheritance and utilization of ancient buildings, historical and cultural blocks and traditional villages. Representatives from different cities released the Fuzhou Declaration and reached consensus on protecting cultural heritage, preserving urban features and inheriting traditional culture.

Research center to advance bio-breeding
The Joint Research Center of Crop Phenotypic Histology, co-founded by Hubei province and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was unveiled in Wuhan Botanical Garden of the CAS on July 27. The new establishment is aimed at bringing national crop phenotypic research facilities to Hubei, advancing Wuhan's goal of developing into a comprehensive national scientific research center and the "city of seed" and leading the development of the bio-breeding industry in China. In the future, the National Crop Phenomenology Research Facility in the region is expected to increase crops' breeding efficiency by more than 10 times and shorten the breeding cycle by half, experts said.

Patent applications in BRI countries grow
According to the National Intellectual Property Administration, 1,558 Chinese patents were granted by countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative in the first half of this year. Computer, communications and other electronic equipment manufacturing topped the list of industries involved in China's patent applications in BRI-related countries in the period. China's published patent applications in these countries reached 3,125, an increase of 13 from the same period last year. A total of 8,029 patents from BRI-related countries were granted by China, a year-on-year growth of 16.2 percent.

Support for technical innovation at SMEs
The Ministry of Science and Technology released a plan last week calling for more support for technological innovation of small and medium-sized enterprises through several measures. According to the plan, authorities will support innovation of SMEs in ways including financial support, resources mobilization and service supply. The ministry also called for improving the system for innovation incubators and implementing policies for supporting high-tech startups of scientific research personnel at home and abroad.

Ministry of Commerce calls for IP protection
An official from the Ministry of Commerce recently announced a 100-day campaign on intellectual property protection for the upcoming second China International Import Expo, calling for further IP protection from Aug 1 to Nov 10. According to the campaign, IP authorities will build an idea environment and optimized system for implementing IP protection and improving related services. It also called for joint efforts on judicial, police and IP administration departments in Shanghai on strengthening law enforcement for all participants of the expo, organizers of the CIIE said.
