HK a platform for inland to 'go global'
The on-going chaos in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has made its future uncertain. Apart from rising property prices, the widening gap between the rich and poor, the evolving political ecology of confrontation between the administrative and legislative organs and weakening governance, the SAR also face a series of other problems, including insufficient opportunities for ordinary people to climb up the social ladder, wealthy people's acceptance of the status quo, and interest groups' efforts to formulate rules to seek greater power and benefits.
To make matters worse, while the old problems remain unsolved, new ones have emerged. After its return to the motherland in 1997, Hong Kong not only has seen a gradual reduction in the number of its foreign communities, but also the vision and knowledge of Hong Kong people have narrowed, with their focus shifting from the whole world to Europe, the United States, and the stock market.
