Tourists choosing lesser-known Thai destinations for unique experiences

LOEI, Thailand - When Zhang heard about the unique festival of Phi Ta Khon held in Thailand each year via her micro blog account, the adventurous 28-year-old leapt at the chance to visit the Southeast Asian nation. She is one of many Chinese travelers choosing lesser-known destinations for their holidays.

The fun began for Zhang the moment she arrived at the airport in the northeastern Thailand's Loei province, located some 520 kilometers from the capital Bangkok, where she was greeted by a team of energetic dancers taking part in the festival. The local dancers, dressed as ghosts and wearing masks and colorful tassels, invited the visitors to join in as the three-day celebration got underway on July 5.
