ARBIL, Iraq - The Turkish vice-consul to Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region was among at least two people shot dead on Wednesday in the regional capital Arbil, prompting pledges of "retaliation" from Ankara.
There was no claim of responsibility for the attack, which came as Turkey wages an offensive against bases of the Turkish separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, in northern Iraq.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemned the killing, saying "there can be no justification for such acts of wanton violence".
