Heritage: Lizard found in dinosaur fossil
Chinese scientists have identified a new species of lizard from a fossil specimen of a Microraptor, a flying dinosaur from the early Cretaceous period (about 100 million years ago). The Microraptor was one of the world's smallest carnivorous dinosaurs. Scientists from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences found the remains of a nearly complete lizard preserved in the Microraptor's stomach. The lizard's teeth and bones differ from other early Cretaceous species. The remains are nearly complete and articulated, showing that it was swallowed whole and head first, indicating that the Microraptor had a primitive digestive system and fed in a manner similar to living carnivorous birds and lizards. The research was published in the journal Current Biology.
