Trash-sorting system uses face recognition

On our Sina Weibo

A residential community in Beijing is applying facial recognition technology as part of its drive to sort rubbish for disposal and recycling. The system will verify the identity of the person getting rid of the rubbish via a camera before opening lids automatically. The smart garbage-sorting system is a pilot program initiated by the Desheng Subdistrict Office. The system has separate bins to hold seven kinds of different rubbish such as paper, plastics and kitchen waste. The community also has an automatic system to distribute garbage bags. Residents can use their phone to scan a QR code to get a month's supply of free bags. Starting trash sorting in 2006, it has 1,900 families taking part.
