Govt chafes at US over Russian defenses
Turkey said on Tuesday that a US House of Representatives' resolution condemning Ankara's purchase of Russian defense systems and urging potential sanctions was unacceptably threatening. The resolution, introduced in May, was agreed in the House on Monday. It urged Turkey to cancel the S-400 purchase and called for sanctions if it accepts their delivery, which may come as soon as July. That, the resolution said, would undermine the US-led transatlantic defense alliance. In response, Turkey's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that its foreign policy and judicial system were being maligned by "unfair" and "unfounded" allegations in the resolution.
Canada
Single-use plastics banned from 2021
Canada will ban single-use plastics from 2021, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday, declaring it a "global challenge" to phase out the plastic bags, straws and cutlery clogging the world's oceans. Less than 10 percent of plastics used in Canada are currently recycled, the prime minister said. Each year, a million birds and more than 100,000 marine mammals worldwide are injured or killed by becoming entangled in plastic or ingesting it through the food chain. Single-use items represent about 70 percent of the plastic waste littering the marine environment.
