China fermenting big cheese market
China's low cheese consumption is fermenting a potentially huge market as more and more Chinese start to enjoy the traditionally Western food. The average annual cheese consumption in China is only around 100 grams, while that for the European Union stood at about 18.7 kilograms, according to Li Defa, director of the Dairy Association of China. China produces more than 20,000 metric tons of cheese each year, while the increasing demands have driven import growth for 13 consecutive years. A total of 108,000 tons of cheese were imported in 2018.
