Be it game of thrones or drones, spotlight's on values

By Siva Sankar | China Daily | Updated: 2019-05-30 06:53

President Xi Jinping was among the first to congratulate Narendra Modi last week. Xi's gesture appears to suggest the world is now being shaped by alternative visions for the future.

I'd argue it'll be a future where the clout of the English-speaking West (not just the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, but Australia and New Zealand) will likely be neutralized by realignments of leaders and peoples of other nations.

The group doesn't seem to see this change coming, if their media discourse, leaders' utterances, and elections and referendums are any indication. One reason for this seemingly wilful or selective blindness could be a mix of arrogance and complacence, arising from the pre-eminence of English among the global languages.
