Xicheng district in Beijing is showcasing the capital's strength in technological innovation and financial service at the ongoing China International Fair for Trade in Services.

The district is at the central area of Beijing, home to numerous leading companies in the finance and tech industries. It's displaying technological applications in culture, life, service and safety at this year's CIFTIS, according to Yuan Li, director of the commerce bureau of Xicheng district.

Renovation of old towns, shanties and hutong (alleys lined with traditional Beijing courtyard residences) is one focus of the district. The Baitasi region is a good example.

It has been transformed from a cluster of old hutong into a modern community composed of offices, rental apartments and artists' studios.

CIFTIS attendees can learn how new materials and innovative technologies were used to save energy, prevent moisture and improve infrastructure in the Baitasi area, said Wang Dekan, a publicity staff member of Beijing Huarong Jinying Investment and Development, in charge of the Baitasi renovation project.

Tao Ni, deputy general manager of Beijing City of Design Development, said award-winning products are displayed at this year's CIFTIS to serve the capital's goal to build itself into a city of design.

The honors that the products have won include the Red Star Design Award in China and globally renowned Red Dot Award.

Intellectual property consultancy provider Guorui Zhongsheng has a warning and management system for IP protection.

The system can help clients to analyze their competitors' IP assets, report related issues and control the risk of infringements, said Wang Peihua, founder of the company.

Companies and institutions present at the event also include providers of intelligent cashier robots, cooking robots, smart intelligent lighting management control systems, and wristbands that can monitor people's health conditions and offer remote diagnosis and treatment services.

Beijing is enhancing construction of a national technological innovation center. Xicheng district's exhibition at CIFTIS aims to "show how technology can help make life better", Yuan said.

The district also holds a series of forums on finance, as well as business matching activities and art salons during the event.
