School in Dalian aims for regional status
A new intellectual property school at Dalian University of Science and Technology was recently unveiled, aiming to become a regional IP training center in Northeast China. The first IP education facility at a private-run university in Liaoning will get support from the provincial IP administration, which will formulate training plans and the school curriculum, local officials said.

IP intensive services see strong export growth
Data from the Ministry of Commerce show that China's intellectual property-intensive services registered high growth in exports during the first quarter of 2019. This reflects improved competitiveness in the service industry and high quality of trade in services, an official from the ministry said. During the period, Chinese companies obtained service outsourcing contracts worth 289.22 billion yuan ($42.03 billion), up 4.4 percent year-on-year, and foreign trade in cultural products reached $19.69 billion, up 7 percent.

Touching beginning for AI joint-laboratory
An artificial intelligence tactile sensor laboratory was recently opened in Zhongguancun, Beijing's high-tech business hub. It was founded by the University of Manchester from the United Kingdom and Tashan Tec, a high-tech company in Beijing. The new lab, the first of its kind in the country, plans to focus on the research into AI chips that will enable robots to have a sense of touch similar to humans, according to its executives.

Court publishes report on judicial protection
The Qingdao Intermediate People's Court rolled out a white paper on judicial protection of intellectual property for 2016-18, the first such bilingual report in Shandong province. Five cases heard in the city were listed among the province's exemplary 10 IP cases last year. The court has recruited 10 technical investigators and 30 technological experts. It has also cooperated with peers in other cities for coordinated protection. In addition, the court has engaged in co-founding an IP judicial protection research center at Shandong University of Science and Technology.

Provinces share their experiences at forum
Scores of intellectual property experts and specialists from universities and government agencies from across the Taiwan Straits exchanged insights into IP operation and cooperation at a round table in Xiamen. Fujian and Taiwan have made marked progress in IP collaboration in recent years. Upgrades in personnel exchanges, cooperation mechanisms and resource integration will be the focus of the future partnership, Yan Zhihuang, head of the provincial IP authority, said at the forum.

High-tech projects compete for 2m yuan
A competition of high-value patented technological projects from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is being held in Zhuhai. Out of 586 entries, 100 will be posted on the event's official website for public comments. Half of the top 100 - made up of 83 from the Chinese mainland, 12 from Hong Kong and five from Macao - will enter the final round scheduled for June and have the opportunity to win a total of 1.9 million yuan ($276,570) awards.
