Crackdown on century eggs in Italy

Italian police recently confiscated more than 800 eggs and described them as "unfit for human consumption". They included century eggs and salted duck eggs. Century eggs, or pidan in Chinese, are the pungentbut-savory Chinese delicacy. Italy's Ministry of Health said the eggs were confiscated partly because of illicit origin and others due to lack of traceability. They also violated the European Union's import laws. The owners of two Chinese restaurants in Misterbianco, a township in Sicily, were detained by officials from the health ministry, according to the South China Morning Post. Many netizens were not happy with the news and one commented that "I'm sorry for their ignorance about food." Another said, "But Italians eat Casu Marzu where maggots are alive and crawling inside the cheese."
Number of massacre survivors drops to 84
