Culture: Saddler keeps ancient craft alive
The "horseback people" in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region boast a 2,000-year history of saddle-making. Togtonbayar, a saddler in Tongliao, Inner Mongolia, has been making saddles for four decades. The 72-year old said traditional saddles highlight the exquisite arts of wood cutting, leather-weaving, metal-carving and embroidery. In 2008, the Mongolian saddle was listed as the National Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Togtonbayar become an inheritor of the skill.
